| With every UK insurance policy
there are certain exclusions. Exclusions are particular circumstances under which
you will not be covered by your insurance policy. It is important that you familiarise
yourself with the precise details of your income protection insurance policy so
that you become aware of the situations in which you will not be protected. Some
insurers have very few exclusions, whilst others have more. Below are some lists
of circumstances and situations that might be included as exclusions as part of
an income protection insurance policy.
Under certain circumstances you will not be eligible for unemployment benefits.
These might include:
- If you have not been in continuous employment for the past 6 months.
- If you had previous knowledge of any impending unemployment.
- If your unemployment occurs within the initial exclusion period.
- If your employment's termination occurs as a result of your own misconduct.
- If you accept voluntary unemployment or retire of your own personal volition.
- If your unemployment is a direct result of war, riot or a nuclear accident.
Similarly, there are certain circumstances that might exclude you from eligibility
for disability or accident and sickness benefit. These might include:
- If you had prior knowledge, at the inception of your insurance policy, of
any impending disability or have any reason whatsoever to believe that you might
become disabled.
- If you become disabled due to alcohol or drug abuse.
- If you become disabled due to self-injury or because you have exposed yourself
to danger through lack of due care. The exception to this rule would be injury
received whilst attempting to save a human life.
- If you receive a disability as a result of civil riot, terrorism or war.
- If your disability arises from stress, anxiety or depression.
- If your disability arises due to a pre-existing medical condition.
- If you receive a disability due to any unnecessary operation or treatment.
- If your disability arises from pregnancy or is a usual gestation-related ailment.
- If your disability is due to a back problem that does not directly affect
your work.
